Renewable Energy with No Upfront Capital Investment

Continuing our series on innovative sustainability tools, we’re taking a look at SunEdison, given its recent announcement to deploy rooftop solar systems on five Walmart Puerto Rico stores, with the potential for 23 stores over five years.

SunEdison is a solar services provider that offers a renewable energy solution with no upfront capital cost, no maintenance expense and long-term price certainty for power.  The company is solar services provider to retailers like Kohl’s, Staples and Wal-Mart.

SunEdison finances, builds, operates and maintains the systems.  SunEdison commercial, government and utility customers are getting the benefit of the long-term predictably priced electricity from a renewable source without the upfront capital expense required to buy a system, or the cost to maintain a system.

The SunEdison business model offers solar energy services, and the client pays only for the electricity generated at fixed energy rates.  SunEdison says rates are less than or equal to current utility rates.

We’d like to hear from you to learn more about other no- or low-cost renewable energy solutions that lead to savings. Share them below.

this is great I’d love to see the financial model that solidifies the feasibility. Cost of cap, terms etc. I can sell this all day long…

It is an interesting business model. Other low-cost renewable energy solutions are based on wind or biomass energy. I am sure that in the future we will able to take advantage of these power sources.
